The laser retina therapy is applied with three types of lasers: argon, diode, and Nd: YAG laser with redoubled frequency. The laser light is adsorbed mainly by the melanin of the retinal pigment epithelium.

The laser therapy is performed in cases of degenerative changes and the presence of holes in the retina, as a retinal detachment prophylaxis.

Diabetic retinopathy

In the course of diabetic retinopathy there are two stages distinguished: early-non-proliferative and late-proliferative, which develops if the treatment is not taken. Increased vascular permeability in diabetes causes swelling of the retina, accumulation of hard exudates (lipids) in the retina, the closure of the blood which results in abnormal retinal perfusion and hypoxia, the production of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), and abnormal vascular stimulation (proliferation).

The aim of the laser treatment is to stop this process. Photocoagulation leads to the oxygenation of the inner layers of the retina, inhibition of VEGF production.

In the treatment of diabetic retinopathy there are two basic forms of coagulation used: a focal photocoagulation and panphototocoagulation (lasering throughout the retina, sparing the center) The laser therapy is effective only if it starts at the right time of the illness. Therefore, it is important to check your eyes systematically.
